We recently had the privilege of designing a coastal home in Beach Haven West for a retired military veteran. The client recently purchased the waterfront home to be his primary residence and was in need of serious design help. Prior to his last move, the client had sold all of his furnishings and had nearly nothing left of his own; with a beautiful outdoor space, and stunning interior, our designer, Russ Heckman, was tasked with a full-scale job and starting with a blank slate. Russ and his client collaborated on choosing every new piece, from sofas, to rugs, to even the tiniest of décor items.

Russ and the client wanted to create a very mature and relaxing space with a coastal influence. Initially drawn to cool colors and distressed woods, the client and designer decided on navy blues and neutrals to create the base palette, while turquoises, sea foam greens and cool blue made their way in as accent colors.

The living room is styled more brightly with turquoise and spring greens. A double window lets enormous amounts of daylight into the space, highlighting the colorful ocean themed throw pillows. A large round cocktail table sits in the middle of the room surrounded by a cushy sectional. A seven foot tall Areca tree is placed behind the sectional to soften the room and create some height to the space. Russ selected pair of mermaid prints to go above the sectional to balance the space and create excitement.

Separating the living room and family room lays a well appointed dining area. The deep navy rug anchors the white and natural wood table, while defining the designated eating setting. Completing the dining area is a coordinating bar framed by two wooden candle sconces to create height and ambiance. Centered above the bar, a round mirror hangs framed with small capiz shells. The mirror helps reflect light in addition to giving the space the “beachy” charm the client wanted.

The master bedroom, offers a great deal of natural light. Russ selected a dusty blue color for the walls and paired it beautifully with a fluffy white comforter for the top of the bed. Rustic wooden nightstands flank the bed decorated with mercury glass mirrored lamps, to create a rustic lux look. Located at the foot of the bed sits a large bench for added storage. On the opposite wall is a dresser, topped with white and blue porcelain accent lamps and snapshots of memories and events from the client’s life.

The second and third bedroom, are decorated both in blues and gray. Navy colored coral sculptures top the dressers with bright yellow flowers to add even more natural elements. These cozy spaces will make any guest feel comfortable in this coastal home.

Just as important as the interior of his home, the client wanted his backyard to be an outdoor retreat. Overlooking the end of the canal, sits a pair of bar stools connected with a table perfectly situated for watching the sunset and having a refreshing cocktail. A matching dining table perches higher up on a patio off of the kitchen. The final touch to complete this oasis will be a fire pit and accompanying seating.

The client feels as if he is on a permanent vacation and loves the peaceful feeling of his new space. Russ did a phenomenal job giving the client exactly what he wanted out of his coastal home.
