Furniture Care - Microfiber Facts
"Microfiber" is simply the name of a company who manufactures fabric ... that’s it! The name has been tossed around so much in the industry itself that now consumers are using it to describe the type of fabric that is actually "Micro Suede".
"Micro Suede" is a fabric that is produced using a micro denier yarn. It is then brushed twice to achieve the suede hand. The first brushing is applied before dyeing and the second brushing is considered a "suede" process which is achieved by brushing with many small pins. The fabric is dyed and then sheared which gives you the final suede look and touch. Finally a finish is applied to the fabric to enable it to be extremely cleanable. Another reason these fabrics are easily cleaned is that the micro denier yarns are smaller and are woven so tightly together that dirt, dust and food particles can not penetrate the fabric itself, allowing the finish to work at its best.
Simple Guidelines to Follow
1. To begin, keep your new microfiber furniture away from excessive exposure to strong sunlight, hot radiators, heat outlets, and dampness.
2. Regular vacuuming – this cannot be stressed enough. You should vacuum your microfiber upholstery pieces as often as you dust the furniture.
3. Turn and fluff all unattached cushions and pillows regularly, helping to evenly distribute the wear.
4. Treat all spills, spots and stains immediately.
5. Avoid soaking the microfiber during spot cleaning or any cleaning as this may leave its own stain.
6. Treat fabrics with common sense. Keeping food away from fabrics is just one way to add years of life to your investment.
7. Do not unzip cushions to have only the covers cleaned. The zippers are there for the manufacturer’s convenience. The covers may shrink and/or lose their shape when cleaned.
8. Select a reputable professional cleaning company when overall cleaning becomes necessary.
Suggested Guidelines for Microfiber Care
Basic care for Microfiber is nothing more than regular vacuuming with light pressure. A gritty feeling on your microfiber furniture is caused by excess of dust or dirt buildup. The piece needs vacuuming at that time.
The nature of microfiber is that it will repel most liquids. You must wipe up spills before they set. Wipe up spills immediately. Dab, don't rub stains with absorbent paper towels or a soft white cloth.
Spray the piece with an anti-static spray such as Static Guard once a week to help repel dust.
For general cleaning, though, a drop or two of mild soap, like Ivory dish soap or Neutrogena soap combined with lukewarm water should clean your microfiber sofa in no time. Rub soap in circular motion with a sponge or soft brush. Pat area dry after cleaning. When completely dry, brush in the direction of the nap to refresh the fabric. Odors like urine can be easily eliminated by blotting the stain with white vinegar and distilled water, applying baking soda and then vacuuming.
